The subtropical city park - changing roles for changing times

How we imagine, build and maintain public parks poses unique challenges and opportunities for cities, communities and designers. Parks have been traditionally valued as places of respite and refuge in the subtropical city. Contemporary landscape theory challenges parks and park designers to do more; to comment on environmental and social issues such as water use, to acknowledge the history of industry and urban growth, and to express transformation and ecological processes.

South-East Queensland is preparing to welcome some 55,000 new residents each year. Brisbane City Council currently maintains over 13, 500 hectares of public parkland. With an increased demand for public parkland space, what are our opportunities and challenges in creating thoughtful, high quality and useable public parkland?
